What is Reiki?

Andara Balance (5).png

Reiki is like the healing kiss from a mother on her child’s scraped knee. It is pure, innocent love that heals in the most natural, sacred way. Reiki is the practice of directing this loving essence for your Highest Healing Good. It is pronounced “Ray-Key” and translates from Japanese as “Universal Life Force Energy.” Other similar terms include the Traditional Chinese Medicine qi (“chee”) discussed in acupuncture, and Sanskrit’s prana (“prah-nah”) or chakra (“chaa-kruh”), often heard in yoga classes. They are all similarly tuning into the vital energetic forces that give you health, inspiration, motivation– the joy of being alive!

Reiki supports your lifeforce with an undertone of deep, pure, expansive, love and healing. It is offered either with light laying of hands on your body, or by hovering hands a couple of inches away from your body. You may feel warm or pleasant tingling in the area the hands are near. After receiving Reiki, you may feel like you had a relaxing massage, the best sleep of your life: whole, rested, relaxed, and balanced.

Reiki is not a transfer of energy between you and the practitioner. I do not give you my energy nor do I take any from you. The practitioner merely acts as a channel, like a straw, for the Reiki to move through and directed in the most beneficial, healing way for your body. Reiki has the ability to dissolve stuck energies, including physical pain, digestive blockages, and restore the body’s balance. Because Reiki is Love, and Love is expansive, receiving Reiki creates space for processing and healing from big emotions, past traumas, and energies/emotions that you have taken on for someone else that ultimately aren’t serving your Highest Good.

It is common for Reiki to be used in balancing chakras, the major energy centers in the body that govern various aspects of body, mind, spirit, and relationships. Reiki is a beautiful way to support emotional processing, improve sleep, deepen spiritual practices, and simply to experience restorative, healing relaxation.

Why Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy healing sought out to help with sleep, digestion, spiritual connection, mind-body connection, depression, anxiety, physical pain, chakra balancing, relaxing, clarity, etc. Reiki is beneficial to any person at all ages in life. Reiki encourages more peace in your whole being (body, mind, heart, spirit) and thus supports more peace in the world.

As with all healing or transformative processes, you will get the most out of Reiki sessions when you trust and resonate with your practitioner so that you feel safe and comfortable to receive this loving, balancing, healing.

A doctor came in to try Reiki for the first time after hearing about it from his patients. He said his first session felt like a “forced meditation” (in a good way). After his second session, he said: “Things have been going really well since we last met up. I re-focussed on some health things I had been ignoring and will say I am feeling much better and pain free for the first time in years.  I credit your sessions on getting me back on my path. I know from my own patterns this will last for some time but winters tend to be tough and I can see myself reaching out in the future if things start to stray. Thanks again for what you do and helping when I didn’t even know I needed it."
This beautiful client in her late 60’s had not had regular bowel movements for months. Her stomach was very hard to the touch. This constipation impacted her appetite significantly for years. She had a 60-minute Reiki session, and the next day I checked in. She wrote:  “Dearest Katie, I didn’t have time earlier to tell you how perfect I feel. I even had a bowel movement. I will make an appointment with you again. Thank you!” It’s now been a few weeks and she has continued to have regular bowel movements. She also commented how light and relaxed she felt for days afterwards, including having a meaningful spiritual experience during the session.

Testimonials

  • Do I keep my clothes on?
Yes! You will lay on your back the massage table fully clothed, often with a cozy blanket and optional eye covering for additional comfort.
  • Does Reiki involve touch?
Yes, Reiki can involve the light laying on of hands where your body needs balancing. The practitioner may also hover their hands off of the body to help with energy flow as well. It is also common to feel a warm sensation as if there are hands on your body even when there is no physical contact. It is similar to other religious healings such as “Laying on of Hands” in Christianity, Judaism, and other local, native traditions.
  • What does Reiki feel like?
Reiki feels like warmth or heat coming from the practitioner’s hands. It is common to feel heat or warm tingling in the areas being worked on, though can be felt anywhere. Afterwards, you may continue to feel warm. It is a similar feeling to having had a massage, gone to a sound bath or deep meditation. You will feel balanced, whole, and peaceful.
  • What can I expect after my session? Is there anything I should do after Reiki?
With any healing work, physical or energetic, it is important to stay hydrated with good quality water and electrolytes. Water is used to help continue flushing and moving energies and physical toxins out of the body over the coming days and weeks after your session. Sometimes you may feel energized and other times, you may want to rest afterwards. Generally, rest is recommended for integrating. This can look like taking a gentle walk in nature, going to bed earlier, taking an epsom salt bath, reading, laying in the sun, etc.! You can experience shifts even 1-2 weeks, or more, after your Reiki session. When you shift your energy, your environment responds around you, too, which means you may find yourself making decisions or changes in unexpected areas of your life (ex. Cleaning your closet, changing your diet, trying a new meditation or going back to a spiritual practice, etc.)
  • Can I get messages from God/Angels with Reiki?
It’s not uncommon to receive images, visions, memories, words, etc. while receiving Reiki or afterwards. These can be from God, a guardian angel, a passed loved one, your Higher Self, etc. While I do not identify as a medium or psychic, it is also common for the practitioner to receive messages during a Reiki session which they may share as well.
  • Does Reiki interfere with my religious beliefs?
Ultimately, this decision is truly yours and what you believe! I can share my experience with Reiki. Firstly, I do not ever intend to impose any religious or spiritual beliefs upon others. Frankly, I’ve spent the past 12 years regularly exploring my own spiritual beliefs and have no plans on stopping in the future! I believe that we are each entitled to experience a relationship with a Higher Power or the Divine in a way that makes sense to us, just as we get to choose our any relationship. Each of us has a beautiful, unique experience in this life even within the same families, communities, any structured system, including religious communities. With that said, I love to ask my clients if they have any religious or spiritual beliefs so that we can invite those spirits and energies into the session. Faith is an extremely powerful part of any healing journey with any belief. All forms of faith, including agnosticism and atheism, are very welcome in my practice. My intention is always for your Highest Healing Good and it always works :) My personal experience: I grew up attending Catholic schools and weekly masses (I even wanted to be a nun at one point!). As it happens in life, I started exploring the other major religions, and found myself drawn to Hinduism and Zen Buddhism during my college years. Somewhere along the way, I fell away from structured practices and kept doing my yoga, meditation, and spending lots of time outside. My spirituality is deeply personal, continues to evolve, and has no name, though I call upon God, Brahma, archangels and saints, Buddha, Jesus, Mary, spirit guides, animals, etc. often! Personally, the more help I can get, the better!
